Big Idea: Our songs display our joy over God’s joy over us

Ephesians [5:15]-21

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
8 Oh give thanks to the Lordcall upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
9Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
10Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
11 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
12 Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
Three Questions for Consideration

With every biblical passage there is much for the reader to consider—things like cultural context, the people involved, the location, and the message that’s being communicated.

All these things should be considered before we move to personal application of the biblical truth presented in the biblical text. Once we have considered these foundational aspects of a biblical passage, that’s when we can move to personal application.

One helpful way to allow the truth of Scripture to mold and shape our lives is to consider the following questions as we seek personal application:

UP: What does this communicate about the character of God?
IN: How does this encourage me to live in a relationship with the Family of God?
OUT: How does this influence me to intentionally live on mission and reach others with the Gospel?
