Christmas through Fresh Eyes Week 2- Day 2

Lynn Bettes Christmas Through Fresh Eyes Devotional

“And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him…” Isaiah 11:2a

In 1992, all I wanted for Christmas was a Deluxe Talkboy made famous in the movie Home Alone 2. The Talkboy was a voice recorder and a playback voice changer. I wanted that Talkboy so badly that I would lay awake at night thinking about the ways I could use that recording device.

On Christmas morning I was overjoyed the moment I ripped off the wrapping paper and saw that I had my very own Talkboy. My joy was soon shattered when I realized that my parents forgot to buy batteries. This amazing piece of technology was rendered useless because it had no source of power.

To carry out the mission to restore all that was broken in “the fall,” Jesus would need an amazing source of power. In Isaiah 11:2-3 we see that Jesus was empowered by the Spirit. Jesus was fully equipped to fulfill the mission of God. The Spirit enabled Jesus to willingly fulfill the work that God had for him. Jesus obeyed and followed God’s plan that eventually led him to death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, “we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our sins, in accordance to the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

From the moment of salvation, the Spirt of God comes to indwell the believer. This Spirit provides the power to live like Jesus. The Spirit produces holiness and gives the power to obey and delight in the Law of God. If the Spirit lives inside, you are not rendered useless. You have the unlimited power of God living inside you.

O Jesus, thank you for obeying God, for redeeming me and giving me grace. Thank you for giving me the power to obey. Help me to walk in the power of the Spirit today and for the rest of my life. Amen.
