“and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds.” Ephesians [4:23]
A Christian is to have a radical reorientation of one’s mental and spiritual outlook.
Our behavior can usually be traced to some thoughts or beliefs that we are embracing. For example, we brush our teeth because we have come to believe that “cavity creeps” will cause decay. This reality is also true of our moral behavior. We choose to act or respond a certain way because of what we have believed. One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to transform our thinking so that God’s truth is what we embrace instead of the lies of the flesh and the devil. Our old self is convinced that living according to the temporary desires of this world will provide us with satisfaction and joy. But the Holy Spirit reorients our thinking by embedding the truth that true joy comes in the presence of God.
This verse implies that the believer has a responsibility to allow the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and beliefs. This comes as we heed the Word of God. Faithfully reading the Scriptures with an intention to learn and obey the timeless truth is one way we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in renewing our minds.
When you think back to sinful behaviors or attitudes you have expressed recently, what belief were you embracing that resulted in your action? What truth do you need to embrace that will conquer the lie that led to your sin?
Spirit of God, renew my mind. Cause me to recognize the lies that result in my acting contrary to Your nature. Convince me of the reliability of Your Word, and the futility of any belief that contradicts it. Amen.
