“And to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians [4:24]
Our sinful behavior should be replaced with actions that give glory to God.
The new self is the direct opposite of the old self mentioned in verse 22. We have been given a totally new nature that is “after the likeness of God.” Thus, God is the creator and pattern for this changed life. Righteousness and holiness are qualities of God that he desires to be expressed in the lives of believers. God desires that we reject a passive spirit in our development into Christ-likeness.
Instead, he instructs us to take action, empowered by the Holy Spirit who renews our minds, to do good and worthy actions. The next few verses in Ephesians 4 will give examples of putting on the new self. For now, what action can you take today that will be the result of truths of God you are embracing? Is there a note you should write? Is there forgiveness to extend to someone? Can you share something with others that you recently received? Should you set aside time for focused prayer?
Reject passivity in the Christian life. Take action, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to show God’s glory.
Father, thank You for empowering me for action. You have made me a new creation, and desire more of Christ to be seen in me. Cause me to act on opportunities that You bring my way to do good for Your name’s sake. Amen.
