“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians [3:23]-24
As we put off the old self and put on the new self, we do it all as our acts of worship of our Lord Jesus.
There is a subtle fear that can creep into the heart of a believer when we are seeking to grow in Christlikeness. Will there be the desired outcome of my efforts? Whether we are trying to treat others honorably, put aside destructive habits, or extend forgiveness to those who hurt us—we can tend to wonder if it will make a difference. Paul reminds us that our growing in Christlikeness is ultimately our service to Him. We are assured that the Lord will always honor our efforts to rightly reflect Him. Our Godly behavior is not for the purpose of changing people or bettering our circumstances. There are certainly times when our living according to the Kingdom of God brings harmony. But when our motive is to serve Him with our actions of repentance and Godliness, we are assured that He will reward us regardless of any “effect” that it has in the immediate.
Heavenly Father, it is Your glory and honor that I desire. Protect me from the deception of lesser pursuits. You have assured me that fullness of Joy comes from You. It is Your glory that I long for. Amen.
