Community in Action Week 6- Day 3

Lynn Bettes Community in Action Devotional

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Ephesians [6:13]

In elementary school, I loved playing tackle football at recess but I hated the pain of getting tackled. In 5th grade, I started playing football for the city team. They gave me all kinds of protective gear; a helmet, shoulder pads, knee and thigh pads, and pads for my hips and tail bone. I even got a mouth guard that protected my teeth, and cleats to give me greater traction.

I will never forget that feeling of invincibility during that first practice with all that gear. I could run faster and hit harder because it didn’t hurt. I was completely amazed. My strength and courage didn’t come from myself but from the gear that was provided.

In a similar way, God has given you spiritual armor to use as you battle the devil. The challenge for you is to consistently put on the armor and trust that what God has provided will protect you. He gave you 6 pieces of armor to protect and prepare you for the battle. He gave you a belt of truth that holds everything else together and gives protection against temptation and self-doubt. The breastplate of righteousness protects your heart from temptation. The shoes of the Gospel of peace allow God to guide your steps as you follow Him in obedience. The shield of faith helps you to trust in God during spiritual attacks. The helmet of salvation protects your mind from evil or sinful thoughts. Finally, the sword of the Spirit is the Word of God that helps keep away evil.

Never forget that God has equipped you for the battle!

God, thank You for providing everything I need to stand against the enemy. Help me to be more faithful in putting on the armor You’ve provided. Amen.
