“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians [2:10]
I recently saw a movie where at the end of the credits it said “written and directed by” so-and-so. It occurred to me that the bonus of being both the writer and director of a movie is you have complete control over the characters in your story. You create them and then you get to direct them in how they play their role in the story you are telling.
In the story of God’s new world, He is both writer and director. He is unfolding an incredible story over the course of history that pinnacles in a completely renewed creation in Christ and we get to play a role in that story. Jesus is the star of God’s story, but we play a supporting role.
In Ephesians 2, Paul reminds us that in Christ we are created by God’s work for God’s work. He is our creator and director, and He calls all of us to walk in the role He has for His people.
The question we face is: will we follow God’s direction? An actor or actress follows the direction of the director because they know that their role is just a part of the larger story the director is telling. The role God has called you to play is part of God’s greater story and He asks all of us to simply follow His direction.
Lord God, I praise You because You are the author and director of history. I praise You that in Christ, You are renewing all of creation, and I thank You that I get to be a part of that one true story. Help me, Lord, to follow Your directives in my life and to walk in the good works that You have prepared for me. Amen.
