“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” Revelation [1:11]
“When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen”, was the famous commercial slogan for brokerage house E.F. Hutton, who in the late 1970s was a successful stock brokerage firm.
Everything changed in the 1980s. The firm became mismanaged, selfish, and greedy, leading to the death of the firm. One of the former executives said, “We made every mistake in the book, and no one was ever punished.” This great company failed as it slowly drifted away from its mission and gave in to the pressure of greed.
The Church is not exempt from this pressure to drift from the mission to glorify Jesus by spreading the Gospel. Jesus encouraged the churches of Asia to stay the course because they were being pressured internally and externally to drift.
Jesus reminds us that the Church is not an earthly organization. It is a family of believers that are saved by Jesus and exists to glorify God. Jesus also promises that He is building His church and that “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it” Matthew [16:18]. Though the Church is under attack from our culture today, we can take heart in knowing that Jesus will not allow the Church to fall, even though churches may fail. When Jesus talks, the Church should listen.
Dear Jesus, thank You for the gift of the Church. Your Church is a reminder that we are not alone. We are part of a family with a mission to glorify our heavenly Father. Help Woodside to remain faithful until You return. Amen.
