“…in the midst of the lampstands one like the Son of Man…in His right hand He held seven stars…” Revelation [1:13]a & 16a
The safest place I ever felt growing up was on the lap and in the arms of my father.
When I was afraid during a storm, his arms would hold me and comfort me. When I got hurt, his arms would lift me up, embrace me, and help me feel better. When I was discouraged, he would place his hand on my back and encourage me to keep going.
In the passage today, we see how Jesus our King cares for His Church. As the Church faces pressure and persecution from culture, Jesus stands in the midst with the Church. He is there feeling the pain of the persecution. He is there bringing peace to the Church through His presence. He is there protecting the Church so that the persecution will not overtake her.
Not only is Jesus with His Church, He has the leaders of the Church in His right hand. Jesus has placed the leaders of His Church under His authority, and He holds them with strength and control. Because they are in Jesus’ hand, there is nothing that can harm them or take them away (John [10:28]).
As the world becomes more opposed to the Church and the Christian faith, it is easy to shrink back in fear. But remember that the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is with you, and He is more powerful than politics and culture.
O Lord, how easy it is to look around and fear the future. Help me today to be reminded of Your power and presence, and turn my fear into faith. Amen.
