“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3
When I pastored in the south, if someone said “bless your heart”, most of the time it wasn’t a compliment. Usually, that phrase was meant to be an insult.
The passage today promises that if you read His words, hear His words, and obey His words you will be blessed. The word blessing here is not meant to be an insult. The Greek word for blessings is makarios, which is the same word Jesus used in the Beatitudes. The word means happy or self-contained happiness. The promise presented here is that “happiness is independent of our circumstances. It is self-contained; meaning that regardless of what is happening to us externally, we can truly be happy internally” (Blessed by Harvest Ministries).
Regardless of our circumstances, we can have true happiness if we read and obey His Word. Obedience is the key to being happy while we wait for Jesus to return. I heard obedience defined as “doing what you are told, when you are told, with a right heart attitude”. Half-heartedly or begrudgingly obeying the words of the Lord will not bring happiness–only frustration. Instead, position your heart and will to hear and obey what God’s Word commands you to do.
Dear Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word so that I may know You and how You want me to live. Help me, Lord, to fall more in love with Your Word, and help me to obey Your Word. Amen.
