“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4
Can you think back to your first love?
Perhaps a middle school crush or larger than life celebrity. For others maybe a sport, book, or hobby. Whatever it was, do you remember that sensation? The feeling that this was by far the most important thing in the world, and nothing could ever compare!
Now, bring it back to the present moment, and I wonder if you find yourself reminiscing about something you haven’t thought of since? Maybe you’re laughing (or crying) at the thought of that person or thing having taken up so much space in your journal for so long.
The commonalities between our first loves are few and far between, but there is a love that connects us all. There is a constant that has been there from the very beginning. That constant is the Lord. You’ve probably heard about it, some of you even know it, but the reality is that He desires for our hearts to be for Him before anything else, as His heart is for us.
In our passage today, Jesus is calling to His church in Ephesus, challenging them to return to their first love. Perhaps the way for us to start this week is to consider a similar question: is Christ our first love? Not the first thing we ever loved, but the first love–first priority–in our lives today.
Lord, thank You for the consistency of Your love in my life, and for Your infinite kindness and patience toward me. Holy Spirit, please protect me from the enemy as I seek to put You first and to love You first. Amen.
