“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4
Obligation versus Joy!
I was fortunate to play high school and college golf, but I remember to this day when the game stopped being enjoyable. Playing and competing became a burden. How had it happened? How could something so important get so distorted? What changed?
Has your love of God and your relationship with Him experienced a similar decline? Has it started to feel more like a burden and less like joy?
Perhaps you sought an identity in that relationship from the things you were doing for Him instead of being loved by Him.
Or it may be, that what once existed as delight and pleasure has perhaps been replaced with duty. In this verse we find God challenging the heart motives of His church, calling them back to relationship and their primary love–Himself.
We are challenged to consider if we have abandoned Him as our first love, which should be the foundation from which our life is built. ‘You don’t have to do these things for my love,’ Jesus says, instead, ‘do them because of my love.’
Despite what you’ve done or you will do, know you are loved by God first and foremost. Live from that truth, not for it.
Holy Spirit, in an ever-changing world that demands my attention, may I be most attentive to Your movements. Help me live with an increased awareness of my position in Your love, and may my life be a testament based upon that assurance. Amen.
