“The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.” Revelation 2:8b
If I told you I had the secret to becoming a billionaire, you probably shouldn’t believe me. While I have some savings, my bank statement does not reflect the wealth of the “super-rich”.
When we look for someone to follow, or at least advise us, we want to find someone who has been where we’re going. The church of Smyrna needed some advice. They were persecuted and poor, and life was only going to get harder. There was coming a day when some would be thrown in prison and others killed.
When faced with death, the only place they should go for advice is to the one who died and came to life; the one who was, is, and evermore will be. He not only lived well and died well, He then overcame death.
Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection gives His words authority. He may not be the one who will tell you how to grow your investment portfolio, but if you want words that can deliver you through life’s greatest trials and death’s deepest darkness into eternal hope, there is only one place you should look. Listen to the words of the first and the last; follow Him, because He knows the way to the end of the journey.
God, whether I’m facing much or little, let my hope always be in You. Show me Your words of life today. Speak truth into my situation, that I might find what is for my greatest good and Your greatest glory. Amen.
