“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.” Revelation [2:11]
Do you feel like a conqueror? When you wake up after hitting snooze for the 3rd time and blearily stumble into your day, would you call yourself a conqueror? After spending your day working for a boss who doesn’t appreciate you, do you feel like a conqueror?
The idea of conquering doesn’t seem to fit with the world we live in. Most days feel more like surviving, subsisting, flowing from one moment of chaos to the next. So, how does this Word from the Spirit to the church in Smyrna fit with our world today?
The church in Smyrna was facing intense persecution and had every reason to give up their faith. Their very lives depended on it.
As you’re reading this, you’re probably not in a life or death decision to keep your faith or abandon it. But in the course of your day, you’ll likely feel a temptation or two drawing you away. What’s one white lie? Who’s harmed by a lingering eye? If it feels good, it must be good, regardless of what the Bible says, right?
Your faith is under assault. In a world of temptations and false comforts, it must hold fast to true satisfaction and comfort. Hold fast! Conquer; Christ has conquered for you.
Father in Heaven, give me eyes to see the battle around me today. Thank You for sending Jesus to conquer sin, and holding me fast. Give me strength to trust You. Amen.
