“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews [4:12]
A two-edged sword is how Jesus described His words of commendation and concern to the church in Pergamum (Rev. [2:12]).
“We will know more once we are in there.” These were the words of the surgeon after looking at the results of the many tests and scans the doctors had used to determine what was causing my son’s chronic abdominal pain. Only when they could cut through the protective layer of tissue could they accurately determine if the scans and symptoms were truly evidencing a diseased organ.
Like a scalpel, Christ’s Word rightly reveals the truth that is in a believer’s heart. Like the Pergamum church, our lives are examined by Christ, and His descriptions are fully accurate. His words penetrate through all the arguments we raise to defend our condition or justify our behavior. Like a sword that cuts in both directions, the Word lays opens our hearts to reveal its true condition. God speaks to us through the Scriptures so that we can discern if there are lies we are believing or distorted ambitions we are pursuing.
Are there areas in your life that push against what God’s Word declares? Have you allowed destructive attitudes to fester, or destructive habits to exist? Allow His Word to cut away the disease by embracing His truth.
Father in Heaven, examine my heart through the truth of Your Word. Grant me the courage to trust that Your Word is true and supreme. Amen.
