“I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” Revelation [2:13]
As Jesus examined the church in Pergamum, He saw a courageous faithfulness in the face of strong opposition.
Following Christ can be challenging, at times. The culture of our schools, workplaces, or social networks can be quite different than the ways of the Kingdom to which Jesus calls us. In today’s culture, rarely is purity honored or honesty admired. Acknowledging Jesus as the only way to the Father is very offensive to some. Living according to the words and ways of Christ can result in animosity from others. Jesus’ words assure us that He sees our challenge and honors our determination to live in a way that identifies with Him.
Holding fast to the name of Jesus implies a commitment to stand for His priorities. Like a coach who affirms a developing player that his hard work and dedication are being noticed, Jesus encourages the church that their faithfulness is honorable and right.
Scripture warns that following Jesus will be costly. A believer may be ridiculed and marginalized. In many nations, Christians risk imprisonment or even death. Commit to live faithfully according to Christ’s priorities today, despite what it may cost you.
Gracious Father, thank You for encouraging me in my faithfulness. Cause me to remain strong when I encounter opposition to Your ways. Give boldness to believers around the world who are suffering for Your name today. Amen.
