“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
We must guard against the tendency to dilute the words and ways of Christ by conforming to the mindset of the world.
I like my coffee nice and strong. On a typical day, I enjoy beginning my morning with a cup of coffee as I read the Word. The vibrant smell of fresh ground coffee beans that transferred the flavor into the percolated water is a promise of the strong pick-me-up to begin my day. On those days when the water ratio to coffee grounds is too high, my morning taste buds are greatly disappointed!
Some in the church in Pergamum (Rev [2:14]-16) had begun to dilute the teaching of Christ with worldly philosophies and morality, and Jesus called them to repent. Have you weakened your vibrant Christian influence by embracing passions of your flesh? Have you compromised what you know is right in your relationships, finances, or behaviors to try to please yourself and honor Christ? This mixing of our ways and God’s ways results in our missing God’s best, and diminishes our influence on other people.
Consider carefully: are you pursuing your own desires instead of God’s in any area of your life? Confess this area to Him and submit to the Holy Spirit as you live for Him today.
Father, empty my heart of any selfish ambition. Fill me with the presence and influence of Your Holy Spirit as I walk in step with You today. Amen.
