“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire…’” Revelation [2:18]
The city of Thyatira was not known for its high culture or for its economic prosperity. Rather, it was an area known for its industrial ability to manufacture metal. The city was home to many metal guilds where the fires burned hot in order to shape and fashion metal tools and weaponry.
So when the angel describes the Son of God as Him “who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze,” this imagery would have been powerfully vivid for the Thyatira readers. The image of fiery eyes seems to relate to the fact that “Jesus searches mind and heart” ([2:23]) as He evaluates the health of His people. He sees below the surface when it comes to the refining work of purifying sin from His people’s lives. He doesn’t merely see our external actions and vocalized words.
This truth leads us to ask ourselves an eternally important question: What is the state of your heart? Is your heart far from God, even though you come to church every Sunday? Is your mind full of judgments against others, even though you would never say such negative things out loud? Is your heart full of lust, even though you may not have acted on it?
Almighty God, we humbly come before You and ask that You search our hearts. Show us any evil way that is in us and cleanse us by Your Spirit. Amen.
