“I know your works; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” Revelation 3:1
Have you ever played dress up before?
I have a nephew who loves playing dress up. He can put on a few pieces of clothing and instantly he is transformed into a doctor. When he puts on the white coat and picks up a stethoscope, in his mind, he is ready to begin saving lives. With a few external additions, he has convinced himself that he is a doctor.
This is similar to what happened in the church at Sardis. The church at Sardis had a reputation for being alive. They looked like they were alive, but God saw through the costume and knew who they were–a dead church. Their deeds evidenced this.
We must ask ourselves if we are playing Christian, rather than truly living alive. Do we have the fruit of a Christian: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Or are we just dressing up as a Christian? Even if we have fooled everyone around us, we will not fool God. Would God say that we are alive or dead?
Heavenly Father, give us vision to see if our lives are alive or dead. Show us if our deeds line up with our claims. Cause us to not only wear the clothing of a Christian, but to live our lives as ones who are alive. Amen.
