“So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath… We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul…” Hebrews [6:17]a,19a
Why should we take God at His word?
This is undoubtedly a question that many of us have asked at some point in our lives. The promises of the Bible are lofty and sometimes seem unrealistic. Will God truly never leave us nor forsake us? Will we really not be put to shame at the return of Christ? These are great promises, but what is the proof that God will keep His promises?
God has shown that his promises are firmly anchored in his character. The author of Hebrews reminded his Jewish readers of the covenant that God made with Abraham thousands of years ago that he would “be a great nation” and that “all the families of the world would be blessed through him.” These promises were fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. God showed that he is a faithful God, his character never changes, and we can put our hope in and trust that our God never changes.
Do you trust the promises of God? If not, then remind yourself that God’s promises are anchored not in something temporal, but in the very character of who he is and remember that he does not change like a shifting shadow.
Father remind me daily that you are faithful to fulfill all your promises and to remember that it is not just what you have said, but who you are. Amen.
