“making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Ephesians 1:9-10
The gospel is the unifying power of God to reconcile people into community.
The events of this past year have made it distinctly clear that unity remains elusive. But Christians need not attempt to achieve what God has already done. To do so misplaces effort. God has unified everything and everybody in Christ by His work on the cross. Our efforts should be focused on submitting to it. We need to maintain the unity that God has created (Eph. 4:3). The gospel provides the power. For us, it is a matter of desire and intent.
The unifying power of the cross reaches far and wide. The cross has provided the power for unity between ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, and distinctions of every kind. The cross brings together that which was pulled apart. The gospel knows no limitation by any category. It is open to all and restricted only by belief (John 14:6).
When we live in unity with others, we bring attention to the unifying power of the gospel and show faithfulness to God’s mission to reconcile people into holy community.
Father, thank you for reconciling me to you through Jesus. Help me to be loving and encouraging to others. And please fill me with your Spirit to empower me to live a life that cultivates unity with others. Amen.
