“And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” Matthew 2:8
The greatest king was honored by some, rejected by many, and yet faithfully expressed servanthood.
When Jesus was born, wise men from modern day Kurdistan recognized an extraordinary star appearance and discerned it as an announcement of the birth of a prophesied Jewish king. They made the arduous journey to Jerusalem and were told of the specific prophecy of the birth in Bethlehem. Though the wise men received this announcement with joy and came to worship the child, the Jewish rulers received it as threatening to their own position and intended to destroy him. This type of reception would be characteristic of Jesus’ earthly ministry. And yet, he continued to serve the people who so desperately needed a Savior.
Does the way people respond to you affect your spirit of servanthood? Or do you tend to serve others when your efforts are received with gratitude and recognition. King Jesus provides us with a timeless example of greatness. Ask the Spirit of God to deepen your commitment to follow Jesus by serving others regardless of their response.
King Jesus, I need your strength to follow your example of servanthood. Deliver me from a self-focused perspective of serving and fill me with your mind and heart as I serve others today. Amen.
