“From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation [19:15]-16
The King will return and rule as heaven and earth join together. God, himself, will finally be with his people.
For many people, Christmas is a season of longing. Kids long for Christmas morning as the presents can finally be opened. Parents long for the gathering of their adult children as the family can finally be together again. Christians long for the return of the King who once came with humility but promised to return with victory. The pain of evil and sadness will be conquered, and the fulness of Jesus’ righteous rule will finally be realized.
As you experience the Christmas celebrations this season, look for the symbols of his return. How do the words from the angels to the shepherds point us beyond Bethlehem to a kingdom yet to come? What aspect of his coming kingdom will help you through your day today?
Father, thank you for the promise that Jesus will return. Keep me from being so caught up in the good and bad of today that I lose sight of the glory that is yet to be revealed. Give me a healthy longing for the King who will soon rule in fulness and splendor! Amen.
