“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John [13:35]
The late Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, was once asked what separated his championship team from others in professional football. Everyone wanted to know his secret to success. Lombardi responded by discussing how his players were, “in love with each other”. He explained the more his players cared about each other, the more they would fight for each other on the field of competition. The offensive lineman played with certainty that nobody would get to their quarterback, Bart Starr. It was contagious. People wanted to be part of what they had. Lombardi’s teams remain among the most successful in sports history.
Jesus gives us a clear and concise description as to how others will know that we are His followers. It is our love for each other! It’s not slogans displayed on our t-shirts and bumper stickers. It’s not bold political stands or Facebook posts. And it’s not related to how much money we give to church. It’s our love for one another.
A prominent pastor once said, “Do you want to know what the best church growth strategy is? Love! It is contagious and people will not be able to stop it.”
Lord Jesus, help me to love my brothers and sisters in Your Church. Help me to truly love the people in my family, at my work, and in my community. May the love Your church displays point people to the love that You have for them. May love become contagious in Your Church.Amen.
