Identity Crisis Week 5- Day 1

Lynn Bettes Identity Crisis Devotional

“For this reason, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus…” Ephesians 3:1

I, (Your Name Here), prisoner.

That’s not exactly how many of us would describe ourselves in any type of correspondence, much less a hand-written letter to a group of fellow Christ followers. Yet this is exactly what the Apostle Paul did to communicate his supreme, sacrificial, and undying devotion to Jesus!

This sort of declaration makes everything that follows very clear. No one who read his letter would have to ask which side Paul stood on. No one would be left to wonder of Paul’s allegiance. Paul states, with great clarity, that he is a prisoner of Jesus! That means that his devotion lies with Jesus. His thoughts and actions are about Jesus. Everything he is and everything he does is devoted to the cause of Jesus the Christ.

When we are faced with trials in our lives, or when we experience the opportunity to turn from God or to go against His ways, it is helpful to consider how other men and women of faith have chosen to stand firm. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul has given a bold declaration of his position.

May we truly be able to fill our name into the line above—as a prisoner for Jesus.

Lord, help me to be fully devoted to You. May my thoughts, my words, and my actions be about Jesus. In the face of temptation, or in the pressure to deny my faith, strengthen me through the power of Your Spirit to live a life that is fully devoted to Jesus and the advancement of His Kingdom. Amen.

2 Corinthians [12:10]
