“Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.” Psalm 119:97 Have you ever noticed that...
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world…In the same way, let your light shine before others…” Matthew 5:13-16
Have you ever tasted something really salty? It will make you purse your lips and shake your head! In today’s text, Jesus uses two well-known items to identity titles of those who embrace Kingdom living and how it will affect those around them.
Salt and light. These two elements were an important part of everyday life in biblical times. Salt was used to keep various meats from spoiling, and to cleanse wounds. Light was critical as there was no electricity!
Jesus wants his people to grasp that His Kingdom is not meant to be kept to one person. As followers of Jesus, it can be easy to keep our faith to ourselves. To only surround ourselves with people who believe and agree with our convictions and beliefs. Jesus likens this behavior to having a MAG flashlight, taking it into the woods in the middle of the night, turning it on, and covering it with your hand. You might as well throw it in the trash! A flashlight is meant to illuminate the darkness. All who follow Jesus should show the world the beauty of the Gospel. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a light in the darkness of this hopeless world.
Father, may I reflect the light and love of your Son Jesus to a dark world. May I pierce this darkness with the illumination of Your truth. Amen.
