“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew [7:24]
How do you respond in stress? I’m ashamed to admit that in times of stress I can quickly go to anger, anxiety and depression. In our lives, stress reveals the strength of our foundation. Stress is a bit like the weight we piled on the balsa-wood bridges we made in my middle school science class. The teacher relentlessly piled weight after weight upon the bridge to show its weak points. Until, ultimately, the weight made our nice little bridge snap!
In our daily lives, stress reveals whether we’ve built our foundation upon sand or upon rock. It reveals the places where our identity is built on something other than Jesus. Stress can highlight areas of our faith that become eroded by threat, insult or competition.
Storms of life come in many sizes. Sometimes, the small storms of stress can actually be turned to a blessing. How? When we humbly ask God to reveal foundations of sand, and replace them with rock that won’t be moved.
Today, ask God to reveal false foundations in your life. Ask Him to teach you to make a choice now that will build your faith on a foundation of rock.
Jesus, You are my firm foundation. You have established my ultimate home in heaven by the sacrifice You made for me on the cross. When stress and struggles come, remind me of this hope. Affirm my heart that my identity is secure in You. Amen.
