Rethinking Family Week 1- Day 5

Lynn Bettes Rethinking Family Devotional

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5

Walking in step with the Holy Spirit will result in thinking and living according to the Spirit!

The transition from Middle School band to High School marching band was quite intimidating for me. Not only was I expected to play the right notes, I was to play them while tromping back and forth across a football field or down a parade route. But the director provided the band with a drum major. Among other things, it would be his/her responsibility to put the band in proper formation, set the standard for discipline, conduct, and even the tempo of the music. The drum major carried out the instructions of the director while being down on the field with us. Our responsibility was to stay in step with our drum major, and follow their leadership. The performance hinged on our following.

We as believers have the Holy Spirit living inside of us, and our success at living out our story-telling responsibility is based on walking in step with the Spirit. By surrendering myself to the guidance and authority of the Spirit, I will be thinking and acting according to the agenda of Jesus Christ. My faithfulness and effectiveness in being a witness for Christ is dependent upon my willingness to allow Him to put me in proper formation and function in His body.

Pray
Spirit of God, I surrender to Your control. Empty me of my selfish ambitions and desires, and replace them with Your plan and purposes for me. Cause me to walk in step with You. Amen.
