“I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go I will send him to you.” John 16:7
When a leader leaves a group or organization, it can shake the foundation of all who follow him/her to their core. This is true in a business environment, in a school, and in a church—large or small. Imagine how the disciples felt when Jesus told them that it would be an “advantage” for Him to leave?
Fear. Doubt. Sadness. Frustration. All of these emotions had to be bouncing around in the disciples’ heads and hearts. They had to be thinking to themselves, “How could it possibly be an improvement for the Messiah to leave us?” And we, as 21st Century readers of the text, have to wonder, “How could it possibly be an improvement for God’s people when the greatest leader of all time leaves?” Both of these questions expose our lack of understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit!
Jesus knew and understood that while He was on earth in His human body, He was only able to minister in one time and location. But when the Spirit, or Helper, comes, He would minister and guide and empower the lives of all who believe.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, you have been given the Holy Spirit. He empowers you to walk out your faith with power and faithfulness. Are you living in and depending on His power?
God, I acknowledge that Your ways are better than my thoughts and plans. Grant me the faith I need to walk in humble obedience to the Spirit’s leading in my life. Amen.
