“And in the last days it shall be, God declares… I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below… before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.” Acts [2:17], 19-20
The Scriptures teach that we as God’s new covenant people are in the “last days” (Hebrews 1:2) and “the end of the ages” (1 Corinthians [10:11]). With the coming of Christ, the final stage of salvation history has begun.
It can be easy for us to forget this truth, because often when we think about the “end times” our focus is on the future heavenly reality when salvation history is over. But the reality is that our future heavenly reality has already begun in Christ. Joel refers to the time of the coming of Christ and the outpouring of the Spirit as “the last days” and “the great and magnificent day”. These are the days we’ve been waiting for; these are the days of salvation and fulfillment and a taste of the heavenly reality that is still to come. And Joel says, wonders have been performed announcing the coming of this great day, the miracles of Christ (Acts [2:22]) and His Apostles (Acts [4:16], 22).
Let’s not discount the glory of living in these last days. We can see so much of God’s finished work of salvation. At the same time, let’s seek the Lord, that He would continue to fulfill His purposes among us.
God Almighty, You are the author of our salvation, and what an amazing story You are writing. All praise to You for Your sovereign hand fulfilling Your good purposes. Amen.
