“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matthew [10:16]
Jesus sent His twelve disciples into the towns of the lost sheep of Israel to preach a message of the Kingdom of Heaven. It was a message that came with great power. Jesus knew this message would not be well received by everyone, especially the Pharisees. Yet he sent them anyway!
As 21st Century believers, we are sent into our respective towns by Jesus to share His message, too. And just like the disciples, we will surely encounter difficulty. According to Jesus’s counsel, we need to employ wisdom while not tearing others down (This seems especially difficult in our current culture!) The potential difficulty that lies in front of us was foreshadowed by Christ. He knew we would encounter challenges carrying His message. Therefore, we can be confident that He will give us everything we need in our time of trial.
As you carry the message of Jesus into your workplace or your neighborhood, are you trusting in Jesus to strengthen you for the task? Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you have what you need to carry the Good News to a world in need.
Father, in the midst of persecution, please keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Grant me appropriate measures of wisdom and vulnerability that I might be faithful to the assignment you’ve called me to. Give me courage to walk in the power of the Spirit. Amen.
