“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious…” 1 Peter 2:4
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This popular slogan is the motivating force behind activities such as garage sales, flea markets, and dumpster diving. The owners of certain items may be just days away from sending some of their things to the trash heap, while other people are ready to give them money for these same items! Different people place different value on the same objects. This dynamic is not unlike what Jesus experienced during his lifetime. The Apostle Peter says that Jesus was “rejected by men.”
Even though many people responded positively to Jesus’s preaching, that did not tell the whole story. Overall, Jesus’s message was despised, his ministry was questioned, and his life was taken from him. But what men counted as trash, God counted as treasure. Peter says, “in the sight of God [Jesus is] chosen and precious.”
Our ability to correctly estimate Jesus’s value is broken. Our sinfulness blinds us to his glory and grace. Our shame hides his beauty and power. Our selfishness keeps him out of focus. But God affirms Jesus as his beloved Son and as Lord of all. The resurrection of Christ proves that Jesus is more precious than anything the world has to offer!
Father, help me to see Jesus the way you see Jesus—as chosen and precious. May I not be influenced by the negative views of others. Help me to treasure Christ above every earthly gift. Amen.
