“…you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5
There is something exciting about watching sports! The intensity of the athletes, the drama of the competition, and the joy of victory, and the pain of losing, all draw you in. They stir such emotion within us that we almost feel as though we are a part of the action.
But the truth is, you are not. You are just a spectator. The action, the skill, the sacrifice, and the effort are all taking place on the field of competition. You are just watching.
Tragically, church can often be viewed the same way—as a spectator sport. People show up to be served, get their needs met, and then they go home to live their lives apart from embracing who they truly are in Christ.
But Peter’s teaching challenges this kind of thinking. For those of us who follow Jesus, we have become a part of the spiritual household of God, in order “to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
Believers are not meant to sit in the stands and watch the action. We all have been gifted by the Holy Spirit to play a part in gospel ministry. Let’s get in on the action!
Father, help me to embrace my place in your family. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your mission in the world. Enable and empower me to play my part in ministering in my community. Amen.
