“Then he said to them, ‘Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’” Matthew [22:21]
Followers of Jesus are to obey our government while we give our ultimate submission to our Creator.
In Matthew’s gospel account, the religious leaders were attempting to catch Jesus in a moral dilemma that they were wrestling through themselves. Jesus’s response sought to promote a respectful spirit towards the governing authority. And then He went one step further. Jesus turned the conversation into the deeper issue of a relationship with God. Jesus desires that His followers would honor the One who had created them in His image.
As image-bearers of God, we are to carefully consider if our lives accurately reflect His ownership of us. We are challenged to examine if our intention is to bring Him glory through how we live.
The life you live is under God’s rule and reign. Therefore, as you prepare to receive the outcome of our national election, commit yourself to respond in a way that honors God. Commit to a respectful attitude in your own heart that is expressed in honorable words to others in your personal relationships and on social media.
Today, it is important to render to God all that He rightfully deserves.
Lord, I need you to remind me today that I am fully yours, and so are the other people around me, regardless of their political position. Cause me to honor you in my words and attitudes during this potentially divisive time in our country. Amen.
