“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:5-6
Most adults understand that our sinful nature can easily convince us that living for selfish ambition leads to a satisfying life. Ultimately, we get to the end of ourselves and recognize that the focus on our own needs and longings will promote anxiety and frustration.
You have probably experienced this when you finished a time of serving others. By giving of your Saturday for a community outreach project or using a week of vacation for a short-term mission trip, you discovered a level of joy and excitement that could never be matched by a day to yourself. This is not intended to be an exceptional experience, but a normal way of life for God’s people. By allowing the Holy Spirit to demonstrate kindness and love towards others, you can experience the rich, full, abundant life God desires for His people.
Allow the Spirit to influence your attitude toward other drivers on the road, other family members at the table, and other people on the job. Ask the Holy Spirit to create opportunities for you to serve others. That’s when you will truly see and experience that an abundant life is discovered when the Holy Spirit is filling you with His empowering presence.
Holy Spirit, empty me of my selfish ambition and fill me with your controlling presence. Produce in me the fruitfulness that comes from a life of service instead of the emptiness of self-consumption. Amen.
