“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Romans 13:1-2
Submission to God is demonstrated by our submission to our leaders.
This principle is difficult to embrace when we see imperfections in our leaders. It is a God-given desire to expect goodness from our leaders. This will be ultimately fulfilled when Jesus returns as King and Ruler of His eternal kingdom. We all have a longing for this type of leader. However, every leader that we have until then will show shortcomings and failures in leadership.
Except when a leader’s authority demands that we violate God’s clear instruction, God expects that we respect and honor our leaders despite their shortcomings. God has authored the concept of authority in our world and has designed humanity to experience protection and provision when living in a healthy submission to authority.
This season in culture provides a good opportunity to thank God in prayer for the leaders in your life. Ask God to bless your family, church, community, employment, and governmental leaders. Commit to God that you will seek to show them honor, despite their shortcomings.
Jesus, I long to experience the coming Kingdom in which you will reign with truth, purity, and justice. While I wait for your perfect timing, cause me to live with a spirit of humility towards my leaders. Give me patience and understanding as I seek to reflect my service to you by my service to them. Bless my leaders today. Amen.
