You’re Looking for Belonging

Most people know what it’s like to walk into a room and wonder whether they’ll be welcomed. It might be a new school, a new job, a new city, or even a new church. You scan the faces and hope someone will make space for you. Underneath it all sits a question that rarely gets said out loud: Will anyone here actually want me around?

Pastor Chris Brooks knows that question well. In high school, the men in his life told him that manhood was measured by how many women he dated. He chased that and came up disenchanted. Later, in his career in finance, the message changed: success was measured by money and how far up the ladder he climbed. He gave himself to that pursuit too, and he felt empty on the other side of it. Your story may look different, but the search is the same. Everyone wants to be fully known, fully seen, and fully loved. The real question is where you’re looking.

That longing isn’t a flaw. It’s part of the design. Scripture describes men and women as made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). That image isn’t about height or hair color. It’s about the inner life. The God whose image people bear has eternally existed in loving community as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So it’s no surprise that you long for relationship. You were made to belong.

But sin takes that good, God-given longing and points it somewhere else. Instead of looking to God, people search for belonging in fraternities and sororities, clubs, careers, sports teams, and even their own families. None of those things are bad. None of them were built to carry the weight of the soul’s deepest longings, either. That’s why Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). He’s offering what the heart has been searching for all along.

Who’s Really Leading You?

In Matthew 12:46–50, Jesus is teaching a crowd when someone interrupts Him. His mother and brothers are outside, asking to speak with Him. In a culture that says “you do you,” that might not sound like a big deal. But Jesus lived in a culture where family honor shaped everything, and He loved His family deeply. Even from the cross, He made sure His mother would be cared for (John 19:26–27).

That makes this moment tense. Mark’s Gospel shows that His family had come to take Him home because they thought He was out of His mind (Mark 3:21). So Jesus faced a hard question that many people face today: What do you do when people you love are pulling you away from following God?

Jesus answers with a question of His own: “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” (Matthew 12:48). He isn’t asking about biology. He’s asking about influence. Who has the strongest voice in your life? Where does your loyalty ultimately lie?

Pastor Chris’s friend Jason Wilson, who mentors young men, once talked with a high school football player whose mistake had cost his team a game. Afterward, several teammates unfollowed him on social media, and the rejection was crushing. Jason told him he should be thankful those people were no longer leading him in real life.

Approval can quietly become a prison. But if God approves of you, you’re okay. If God affirms you, you’re okay.

Finding the Family You Were Made For

Acknowledge the tension. Be honest before God about the relationships that are pulling you in two directions. Some people avoid this choice for years because they’re afraid of what they’ll lose. Naming it out loud, even with tears, is the first step toward freedom.

Let God’s voice be the loudest. Every morning, Pastor Chris prays over his children, “Lord, today may the loudest voice in their hearts be your voice.” Before the emails, the notifications, and the opinions start rolling in, pray that same prayer over your own heart. The other voices won’t disappear, but they don’t have to lead.

Stop putting God’s plan up for a vote. Following Jesus won’t always make sense to the people around you. Generosity, a mission trip, or a hard yes to God may leave others scratching their heads. God’s ways are higher (Isaiah 55:9), and He doesn’t ask for anyone else’s approval before He leads you.

Love your people by choosing Christ. Francis of Assisi handed his fine clothes back to his angry father and chose Jesus. Nabeel Qureshi lost his family’s approval when he followed Christ, yet he understood that following Jesus was the most loving thing he could do for them (1). Your faithfulness may be the very witness that someday points the people you love to Him.

Accept the invitation instead of trying to earn it. When Jesus talks about doing the Father’s will, He isn’t adding another hamster wheel of approval. He makes the Father’s will clear: believe in the One He sent (John 6:29). Belonging in God’s family isn’t earned. It’s received.

Share your story. Scripture says believers overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony (Revelation 12:11). Let your light shine so others can see God at work (Matthew 5:16). Someone near you is still searching.

Belonging Is Closer Than You Think

Jesus stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!” (Matthew 12:49). In God’s family, there are relationships that run deeper than blood. That family isn’t built on performance. It’s built on being fully known, fully seen, and fully loved.

The math of the gospel is simple: Jesus plus nothing equals everything. Choosing Christ won’t stop the storms from coming, but it gives you a peace that holds steady in the middle of them. The belonging you’ve been chasing was never out of reach. It’s found in Christ, and in Christ alone.

Where have you been looking for belonging? This week, name one relationship or pursuit you’ve been relying on to tell you who you are, and bring it honestly before God. Then, each morning, ask Him to make His voice the loudest one in your heart.
