7 Things Motherhood Taught Me About God
May 8, 2026
In every role God assigns us, we should ask: “How does this reveal Jesus, and how can I reflect His goodness in it?” Motherhood is no exception. In fact, it’s one of the most powerful places to live that out daily.
Our days can feel long, messy, and even mundane, but none of them are wasted. God meets us in the chaotic, quiet, and ordinary moments, and He uses it all for something eternal. As mothers, our calling is to radiate and reflect the Lord, even when it’s hard. Our children are watching and learning from what we say and how we live.
As we work toward reflecting Jesus in motherhood, here are seven things that being a mom has taught me about God.
1. God is Present in Our Pain
Motherhood is painful. It takes nine months to give birth, and adoption can take anywhere from six months to several years. God doesn’t always lead us toward comfort or convenience, but from labor to delivery to everyday life as a mom, God gives us grace to endure pain. We get to partake in labor with the Lord, knowing that the labor is never in vain.
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58
2. God Comforts Us
No one provides comfort like our God, and mothers often mirror that comfort to their children. Because we live in a fallen world, our children will inevitably face discomfort, disappointment, diagnoses, and other hardships. As moms, we can’t always shield our children, but we can reflect God’s comfort through the Word, our loving and consistent presence, and our joy in all circumstances.
“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” – Isaiah 66:13
3. God Relates to Our Physical Sacrifice
Our bodies tell the story of motherhood’s sacrifices, just as Jesus’ body still bears to marks of suffering on the cross. Our bodies and lives have will never be the same after having children, but each mark serves as a beautiful testament to God’s intentional design. It’s a fact that our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made, just like those of our children.
“Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” – John 20:26-27
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” – Psalm 139:14
4. We’re Always on His Mind
I think about my kids and their needs every day. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of them. I ponder their futures and pray over them. Just as we are mindful of our children every day, the Lord is even more mindful of us. We are always upon His heart. Before a request leaves our lips, He already knows what we need.
“The Lord has remembered us…” – Psalm 115:12
5. God Prepares a Table for Us
I can get frustrated if I’m in the kitchen more than three times a day, but Jesus, who offered His own body as the bread of life, never complained about preparing a meal for us. Just as He prepares daily bread and nourishment for His children, it’s a holy use of our time to create nourishing meals for ours. God calls us to reflect Him at our tables. After all, Jesus’ invitation to fellowship is to dine with Him.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” – Matthew 26:26-28
6. God Cleans House
Maybe as a mom, you’ve found yourself declaring something along these lines: “This is the last time I’m picking this up.” No matter how many chore lists and incentives I give, there’s always more to clean up. However, the Lord has surely cleaned up our messes without keeping score or issuing final warnings. I’ve learned that we can reflect God by being gracious and faithful stewards of the spaces in our homes.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” – 1 John 1:7
7. God Gives Us Wisdom
The Lord doesn’t want motherhood to leave us in a state of out-of-control chaos, which is why I’m learning to create boundaries. When we pursue the Lord, He gives us wisdom for our good and our safety. Modern-day tools like meal prepping, chore lists, and cleaning days can be helpful, but it is the Lord who gives us wisdom on how to live each day as faithful and godly mothers.
“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established…”– Proverbs 24:3
I want to remind every mother who reads this that God doesn’t expect perfection in our parenting. Instead, He sees us during our highs and lows, in the thick of meltdowns and under piles of laundry. He knows every doubt, fear, and uncertainty, and He meets us there. He truly does understand. He welcomes us to lean into Him and accept His grace—for His grace is sufficient for us, and His power made perfect in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9).
