When you think of God, what comes to mind? The creation of the world? Heaven and Hell? A list of rules, or dos and don’ts? The story of Jesus Christ? The mystery of the Holy Spirit?

Or do you think of His character? God is described as many things in the Bible: faithful (1 Cor. 10:13), patient (2 Peter 3:9), a provider (Matthew 6:26), perfect (Psalm 18:30), gracious (Psalm 103:8), and many other things. He is a righteous, holy, and loving God who cares for us more than we can imagine.

One characteristic of God that can be overlooked is how mighty He is. Isaiah 6:9 says:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 6:9, ESV

Our Lord shall be called Mighty God. When I looked up the word “mighty” on Google, the definition was “possessing great and impressive power or strength, especially on account of size” (1). Some synonyms Google gives are “fearsome,” “ferocious,” “big,” and “tough.” The Bible says to fear the name of the Lord, so He must be fearsome. God is big and vast; after all, He created the entire universe. His wrath is not something that I want to experience!

Google’s definition of “mighty” can lead us to picture a God who is fearsome or even scary. While God can be wrathful and we should fear Him, it’s also important to understand the context of His mightiness. The word “mighty” in the context of the Old Testament is translated from the Hebrew term “gibor,” which can also mean “hero.” In the Hebrew language, “gibor” is defined as “courageous, self-sacrificial, a warrior, and morally excellent (2).

God is MIGHTY! He is courageous and never afraid or worried about what is to come. He knows all things. God is self-sacrificial; He sent His Son as a propitiation for our sins, sacrificing Himself for our sake (Romans 3:24–25). God is a warrior; He FIGHTS for us! He loves us so dearly — more than we can ever imagine — and He has fought a war against the enemy for our freedom from eternal damnation.

God is morally excellent. He has perfect ethical conduct and a holy moral code: His Word. He never strays from excellence or perfection, so we can rest knowing He is always the best role model to seek guidance from.

Praise God for His mightiness! How comforting it is to know we have a warrior God who is all-knowing, fully in control, unstoppable, and loves us more than anyone else in our lives. In moments when we feel like life is spiraling out of control, we can be assured that God is powerful, mighty, and fully in control of every single thing that happens in the world.

So, what about you? What do you think about God’s mightiness? Do you believe God is mighty, powerful, and fully in control of everything? If you do, praise God! Angels rejoice when even one person repents of their sins and chooses to believe in Him (Luke 15:10).

If you’re struggling to believe this today, you are not alone. Fully placing our hope and trust in God can be one of the hardest things to do. I ask myself often: “I know God is powerful, but will He use His power to help me?” While I logically know the answer is yes, in my heart I sometimes doubt. Does God really love me? Is He truly in control of my life? Is He really listening when I cry out? It’s easy to say, “yes, I believe” while not fully believing it in our hearts.

Thankfully, God is merciful. He forgives us for our sins, including when we rely on ourselves more than on Him. When we doubt Him and decide to rely on our own power and might, He doesn’t enjoy it. He doesn’t delight in us trying to do everything on our own and pushing Him away. Yet, He still loves us — SO much.

God cares deeply for you. Every time those worried or unbelieving thoughts creep in, pray. Take those doubts to the Lord — He wants to hear them! He is so mighty, and He wants to use His power and strength to protect and love you. Let your first response in seasons of doubt be to run to Him.
